To unleash the power of technology to facilitate agriculturists become world-class prosperous agripreneurs
India is among the top three producers of every major food commodity in the world. We have the second largest arable in the world (160 million hectares), and we have the second largest irrigated farmlands (68 million hectares) in the world. Our agri sector contributes nearly 17% to India GDP, and nearly 30% of Indian manufacturing depends on agri produce (Food processing, Textiles, Packaging, Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics, etc.). Agriculture employs nearly 43% of India’s workforce, and yet is among the largest unorganized employment sector.
And yet, as per NABARD’s Financial Inclusion Survey (NAFIS), average agri income of Indian farmers is INR 3,140 per month per family of 4.9 members.
The root causes are very small landholding averaging 1.5 acres (0.6 hectares) of 127 million small and marginal farmers, and therefore poor yields providing very low income, inhibiting technology adoption for productivity increase.
The small and marginal farmers do not have access to capital to adopt technologies for better yields, they are ill-trained and ill-equipped to operate and manage sophisticated agri technologies, they do not have adequate market linkages to sell their produce, and they are poor business managers.
We believe technology is a great enabler and a great leveller. Agritech Enablers intends to comprehensively tech-enable farmers to deliver manifold increase in their income, helping them become prosperous and rid of perennial poverty. This is our vision.
Over next three years, Agritech Enablers is targeting to develop 1000 polyhouses and 2500 hectares of open farms with comprehensive technology intervention across India.
Technology adoption by Indian farmers, and specifically by small and marginal farmers, is woefully inadequate. Only 5.2% farmers own tractors, only 1.8% have power tillers, only 1.2% farmers have deployed drip irrigation. And this shows in the performance. Not only the farm landholdings are very small, Indian farmers’ productivity per hectare is among the lowest in the world.
Agritech Enablers will facilitate technology in every segment of farming to solve the maladies of small and marginal farmers. Key objectives of technology intervention will be
Increase productivity
Improve farm efficiency and reduce cost
Reduce use of chemicals and increased use of bio agents
Reduce Waste
Agritech Enablers will facilitate deployment of a range of technologies and systems
